If you’re looking for a super easy pattern for an all cotton hot pad or kitchen trivet, you’ve come to the right place! Mary’s magic hot pad, is so easy, it works up like “magic”! I’ve named this pattern after my husband’s amazing Grandmother, Mary, cause without her magic, I would have never been inspired to learn to crochet! She has been a huge influence on me over the years as I’ve learned to cook and craft. Coming from a family that wasn’t big on home cooked meals or being creative, I got lucky when I married a man that loves to help me explore all the fun of arts and crafts in the world!

Got weddings, graduations or a house warming party coming up? These are great to pair with a couple dishcloths for an easy and affordable handmade gift. We’ve got free printable wrappers for both the hot pad and the kitchen set in our FREE PRINTABLES section. These give your projects a great finishing touch for gifting or selling.

@ 120 yards cotton yarn

H hook

Large tapestry needle for weaving in ends

CH = Chain

SC = Single Crochet

Best if you use 100% cotton yarn, like Sugar N Cream, not a soft cotton.

Your Hot Pad/Trivet won’t hold up to as much heat if you use a mix of cotton/polyester as the polyester may melt if the pan is extremely hot.

This pattern is so easy! No row counting, after the chain and the first 2 rows, you’re just going to crochet around and around and around until your sides meet. It’s really, magic!

CH 38

ROW 1: Turn and SC in every stitch, second from hook to end. CH 1

Now here’s the fun part, DO NOT TURN. You’re going to SC in the first stitch on the other side.

After this, just SC in every stitch.

Around and around and around you go, and like magic, a little canoe will form, then a pocket, until finally you’ll see the 2 squares.

Keep going…….

You’ve still got another round or two to go at this point, before you are going to make your loop for hanging and then sew your sides together!

←This is where you’ll make your loop for hanging.

CH 15

Then measure yarn about 4 times the diagonal of your hot pad or about 25” and cut.

Pull the yarn through to lock your last stitch.

Use the yarn that’s on the end of the loop to sew your sides together.

Making sure to make a knot in your first stitch to lock your loop in place.

Weave your ends in after sewing down and back up. You’ve now got a great hot pad or trivet for your kitchen or someone else. I would love to hear how this pattern worked out for you and what colors you choose.
